If you’re like me, you’ve been waiting for Only God Forgives since pre-production news about it broke in late 2011, you’ve been keeping up on all the photos for it, you’ve read the 2nd draft script for, seen the 3 trailers and watched the 3 clips; and can safely say based on solely on reading the script (let alone watching the R-rated trailers) that this film, is NOT what most people think it will be.
It’s not Drive 2, just STOP. Seriously, if you’re going to compare yet another film to Drive (The Place Beyond The Pines was also unfairly compared toit), when you have absolutely no fucking idea as to what you’re talking about, do the world a great big favour, and shut the fuck up. A quiet, violent man, a Cliff Martinez score, awkwardly quiet scenes that build up tension before snapping into bloody violence or outbursts of profane anger, and the combination of Ryan Gosling and Nicolas Winding Refn do not warrant unfair comparisons to a totally different film.
It’s the furthest thing from Drive.
You cannot begin to fathom the onscreen violence in the film, let alone the uncomfortable and unnerving conversations, nightmares and other goings-on in the script. I could go on and on about the script, all the things that happen in it that you won’t ever see coming; all the brutal, blood/gory violence; the calm moments before the storm..there’s so much more to this film than there was in Drive, and so much that I don’t think the average moviegoer is going to full appreciate. This isn’t Iron Man 3 or some other watered -down CGI laden special effects extravaganza overloaded with over-the-top shootout, insane amounts of explosions and improbably fight scenes that last 10 minutes.
This is a deep, stark, violent and intense thriller about a kickboxer named Julian whose brother is killed and is told by his overbearing and menacing as fuck mother to hunt the killers down and bring her their heads on a fucking platter, and ends up coming toe-to-toe with Chang aka The Angel Of Vengeance, a corrupt cop who may prove to be Julian’s greatest foe. It’s dark, moody, gritty, volatile, as bloodily violent and gory as Django Unchained , and a pure trip into the depths of hell. In the 2nd clip for the film released yesterday, Julian smashes a glass on a man’s mouth, slaps him around, kicks his legs out and then drags him by his upper jaw down a hallways..that’s not even in the 2nd draft script, and is only the beginning of what will surely be the closest thing to a nightmare as you’ll see on film.

Director Derek Cianfrance provides accompanying commentary on an exclusive clip from the film that showcases a “chase” sequence and introduces us to Ben Mendelsohn’s character Robin, courtesy of Entertainment Weekly.
